Warning! This hasn’t been updated since the summer of 2020.

Hi! My name is Videsh Suman. I am a second-year MS student in the College of Information and Computer Sciences at University of Massachusetts Amherst. Everyday I feel more inspired by Machine Learning research, and intend to build a career in this field. My academic interests span the different facets of Machine Learning and Computer Vision. My current research on risk assessment via traffic interaction modeling has gotten me really excited about the field of Autonomous Driving research. Previously, I was exploring the areas of semi-supervised learning, vision applied to ecology and vision + language learning through some research implementations.

Before grad school, I was majoring in Civil Engineering as an undergraduate at IIT Bombay. Though the later half of my undergrad was essentially invested in understanding an array of topics on Computer Science and Machine Learning. In my final year, I was a part of the Medical Deep Learning and AI Lab. My Bachelor’s thesis was jointly advised by Prof. Amit Sethi and Prof. Subimal Ghosh.

I spent the summer of 2019 interning at Microsoft Research, Bengaluru. I worked on state space modeling approaches for data-informed network simulation, and was primarily advised by Dr. Sundararajan Sellamanickam. This experience was quite instrumental for my inclination towards research. In the summer of 2018, I had interned at Disney India, where I used NLP technologies to create a PoC of task based conversational assistants.

I help organize Machine Learning and Friends Lunch at UMass every Thursday. Do get in touch if you want to give a talk some time. In my initial years at IITB, I used to be one of the active organizing members of Web n Coding Club and Mood Indigo.

I consider myself an avid enthusiast of visual arts and music. Occasionally, I like to sketch or play the guitar. Some of my favourite artists include Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queen and Pink Floyd. I love watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S every now and then. PhDComics is really fun too.
